Gürbulak Border Gate, which connects Türkiye to Iran and Central Asia and lies on the historic Silk Road, was first modernized in 2003. However, over the years, it became neglected and unable to respond to Türkiye's growing trade on the "Revitalized Silk Road". To address this issue, the border crossing was handed over to the GTİ in 2020 to be modernized through a successful example of collaboration between the government and the private sector, using the "build-operate-transfer" model.

Investment works initiated at the Gürbulak Border Gate, which is the most important border crossing opening to Iran and where nearly 800 trucks enter and exit daily, are being carried out in stages without interrupting vehicle and passenger traffic. Upon completion of the project, the current field area of 180,000 square meters will be expanded to 320,000 square meters, and the closed area of 16,000 square meters will be increased to 48,000 square meters. A total of 16 lanes, with 8 entry and 8 exit lanes for truck crossings, and 4 lanes, with 2 entry and 2 exit lanes for cars and buses, will be constructed, thus doubling the current capacity.

As part of the modernization project, the field will be equipped with 3 vehicle control and screening systems (x-ray), high-tech CCTV systems, card access systems, license plate recognition systems, and vehicle undercarriage inspection systems, ensuring a highly secure and controlled facility. Additionally, within the scope of the modernization project, a total of 3 apartment buildings with 198 units, totaling 20,000 square meters of closed area, will be constructed for the use of public personnel stationed at the field. Additionally, a daycare center and social facilities will be built.
